A kettle takes about the same amount of time to boil no matter how the day is going, which is exactly the point. The tea ritual works less because of what’s in the cup and more because it’s one of the few moments left that can’t be rushed.
Why it matters
Most of the day bends to whatever is most urgent. A small ritual with a fixed, physical duration - water has to boil, tea has to steep - doesn’t. It’s a built-in excuse to do nothing else for a few minutes, which turns out to be harder to justify than it should be.
The tea isn’t the habit. The permission to sit still while it steeps is.
What to watch
Look for more lifestyle advice to frame small rituals explicitly as boundary-setting tools - not self-care in the abstract, but a scheduled, legitimate reason to step away from a screen for five minutes at a time.
